This is a highly asked question and one that honestly is quite simple. The thing that I hope you take away from this post, is do what is true for you two as a couple! Everyone has a story to be told and choosing a location for the shoot is where those memories will stay as you look back at these images years down the road. In this blog post I will walk you through the three things you can decide before choosing a location for your session. Maybe you’re someone who wants to have your photographer choose (since we know of perfect spots) which is also great, just keep these things in mind before hand and it’ll help you out in the long run! Also, at the end of this post I’ll share my thoughts about anniversary sessions and the importance of them!
This is the most important thing because it’s YOUR story and YOUR memories! Keep the location for your session unique for you two vs shooting somewhere that “everyone else” does. If there is a pretty location you know of that means something to you and holds a special place in your heart, I encourage you to take advantage of it!
This could be in your hometown, where you were proposed to, a close family members land and my personal favorite, a destination location!! Trips either in the USA or outside the US make a perfect time to schedule your session! Whether it’s the beach, mountains, lake, rolling hills ect. these ALL make unique locations. I am a photographer who LOVES traveling for sessions and am so excited for couples who choose to be adventurous!
This is a big one you’ll want to do your research on! Maybe you already know which you like over the other which is GREAT! Even if you don’t have the answer to #1, this is something you’ll need to for sure know before having your photographer suggest locations.
Here are a few ideas below but get creative with what’s unique to YOU!
Greenery
Open field
Tall Grass
Trees
Mountain
Beach
Gardens
Ect…
City
Fine Art
Modern
Rooftop
Fancy hotel
Airport
Ect…
If you have the spot in mind now after asking yourself those first two questions, perfect! If you still don’t have a place that comes in your mind don’t worry! Speaking for myself as a photographer, I know of BEAUTIFUL locations that will turn out perfect for sessions!! Something I will do, is send my clients options. I can’t speak for other photographers but most every photographer, will have locations they enjoy shooting and recommendations for their couples. Trusting your photographer is top priority when allowing them to choose the location 🙂
Since we’re talking about locations I wanted to throw in this post about anniversary sessions! The three tips above, play into this type of shoot as well. Most couples plan either a weekend getaway or a legit trip to somewhere beautiful & romantic to celebrate their marriage. This is the perfect time to focus in on you two as well as having memories captured from your getaway. Just because the engagement and wedding season of life is over, think about all the many more things in your life as a couple that’s worth being documented. Whether it’s your first year, 5th, 10th or even 30th+ year of being married, anniversaries are something to celebrate and I believe that your story doesn’t just end after you say the “I do’s.”
That’s all for the 3 simple things that go into session location choosing! Good Luck!! 🙂
The Story behind WHY I’m a photographer might be something you can relate to. It was the thing I hated most about myself but now am so thankful for. Read about it HERE!
